South Slovenia
Nature Paradise Kocevje (formerly Gottscheer land)

South Slovenia belongs to one of the regions in Europe with the largest biodiversity. Wonderful
mixed forests cover the wild romantic low mountain ranges (up to 1200 metres). The forest
wildness is interspersed with park elements, abundantly flowering meadows and rough grassland.
Water penetrating into the craggy karst limestone has formed a massive cave system with
underground streams and lakes. A doline, sink or sinkhole, is a closed depression draining
underground caused by collapsed cave systems in karst areas. The streams and rivers border
the untouched alluvial forests. As well as bears, wolves, lynx, Black Stork, Capercaillie and
Black Grouse, reptiles, insects and flora add to the biological richness of the area.
